World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Holds First Virtual AGM, Emphasising Global Collaboration for Travel Recovery

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) recently hosted its first virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM), bringing together industry leaders from around the globe to discuss the recovery of the Travel & Tourism sector.

Chaired by Chris Nassetta, President & CEO of Hilton and WTTC Chair, the meeting was attended by more than 120 CEOs. Notable attendees included WTTC Ambassadors Taleb Rifai, Michel Taride, Michael Frenzel, and Peter Greenberg, as well as several Members and Vice Chairs, such as Gary Chapman, Jeffrey C Rutledge, Jerry Noonan, Darrell Wade, Jane Sun, Desireé Bollier, Manfredi Lefebvre, Arnold Donald, Alex Zozaya, and Hiromi Tagawa.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, opened the meeting by stating that 2020 will be remembered as the year the world stood still and millions of people lost loved ones to COVID-19. She emphasised the need for the sector to come together in a globally coordinated way to ensure the recovery process is swift and painless.

The conclusion of the AGM was that restarting international travel in a safe and seamless way is vital to recover the 140 million plus jobs impacted by the pandemic. The WTTC Members are committed to continuing their work together to achieve this key objective.

In August, the WTTC sent letters to the Heads of State of the G7, Australia, South Korea, and Spain, calling for strong leadership and effective international collaboration to resume travel safely. The G20 endorsed the G20 Guidelines for Action on Safe and Seamless Travel during a meeting in October, and the establishment of the G20 Tourism Working Group was welcomed in the G20 Declaration.

The G20 Heads of State announced a 'G20 Declaration' last week, committing to continued collaboration with stakeholders for the Travel & Tourism sector's recovery from the pandemic. Spain will be hosting an event in La Palma next week to advance key actions to restart the Travel & Tourism sector and enhance international collaboration.

During the meeting, major 2020 initiatives presented to attendees included WTTC's 100 million Jobs Recovery Plan. Gloria Guevara praised the WTTC team for their tireless work throughout the year in bringing attention to the crisis the sector is facing and being the voice of the sector.

No additional attendees besides Chris Nassetta were found in the search results for the first virtual AGM of the World Travel & Tourism Council. The WTTC will continue to work towards a swift and painless recovery for the Travel & Tourism sector, emphasising the importance of global collaboration and safe travel.
