Weekend nighttime bus service confirmed for summer in Rīga
Riga, the capital city of Latvia, is set to trial a new night public transport service, aiming to assess passenger demand for night-time travel options. The pilot project, scheduled to run from mid-May to 28 September, will cover specific days of the week and certain neighbourhoods.
The Riga City Council has allocated EUR 100,000 from the "Contingencies" budget program to cover potential losses incurred by "Rīgas satiksme" Ltd, the operator of Riga's public transportation network, during the trial period. However, it's important to note that this budget allocation is not specifically earmarked for the pilot project.
The night service will operate from midnight to 4 a.m., running on Saturdays, Sundays, or public holidays. Initially, the service will not be available in the neighbourhoods of Imanta, Jugla, and Dreiliņi, nor will it follow a circular pattern from the city centre. Instead, the service will run on a specific route within the public transport network.
The pilot project will not involve eight nighttime public transport routes that were previously cancelled due to a decrease in passenger numbers and the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic. The service will be provided by buses, although during the initial phase, the service may not be provided by buses.
The purpose of the pilot project is to gauge the demand for night public transport in Riga. If successful, the question of introducing night public transport on permanent routes will be assessed. It's a step towards ensuring that Riga's public transport caters to the needs of its residents and visitors around the clock.
This pilot project marks a significant milestone in the city's efforts to improve its public transport services, providing a valuable opportunity to understand the need for night-time travel options in Riga. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this exciting initiative.
