Undercover Group and Concealed Connections
Rewritten Article:
Embarking on a thrilling journey, I recently hopped aboard the Secret Circle tour, offered by Glacial Experience in the enchanting south of Iceland. Our expert guide, Kjartan Valgarðsson, picked me up bright and early in his sleek black Land Rover, setting the stage for a day packed with surprises.
You might think it's just a coincidence, but within minutes, Kjartan and I discovered not one, not two, but three mutual acquaintances—all of whom happened to be my long-lost cousins. You see, Icelanders, much like Velcro, have a knack for seeking invisible bonds that tie us together. We yearn to uncover hidden relatives, expanding our circles, and that's exactly what we did!
We shared laughs and stories as we headed eastward over Hellisheiði mountain, where we were treated to breathtaking vistas of Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes, glittering Vestmannaeyjar islands, and even the remote Surtsey Island.
Our first unplanned stop was at a gas station in Árnes, where we chatted with a local tour guide—all while enjoying a steaming cup of coffee. Suddenly, I heard a voice I hadn't heard in years—it was my dear childhood friend, now living in Germany. With a heartfelt embrace, we reminisced and marveled at running into each other again. As it turned out, Kjartan and my friend's German husband had shared an apartment during their Icelandic college days.
The surprises kept coming—as I prepared to give our newfound friend a hug, I recognized her son, a spitting image of his father, just a few decades younger. Meanwhile, his sister and father stood nearby, with graying hair as expected. It was a heartwarming reunion, captured by photographs as the group beamed with smiles.
Next, we visited the picturesque Hjálparfoss waterfall, which seemed to be adorned with the veils of two brides, back-to-back, amidst the surrounding black lava rocks. As the highway narrowed and winds curled around us, I found myself surrounded by a diverse crew: a driver/guide, a pilot, a multi-linguist, a founder of a language school, a marketing expert, and a teacher—proof that even small spaces can hold big talents!
Our next stop was Háifoss waterfall, one of Iceland's highest, located in Fossárdalur valley. Hiking down a narrow trail revealed a grand spectacle—Háifoss cascading down 128 meters into a deep gorge, with its snow-white water shimmering against red-tinged cliffs. To the side, a smaller waterfall, known as Granni, added to the beauty.
Our adventure continued in the magical realm of Gjáin rift, where the landscape resembled a fantastical fairy tale come to life. Riverbeds, waterfalls, and lava formations boasted every shade of green. It's no wonder Game of Thrones chose this as a filming location!
Our final stop was the "secret" side of Gullfoss, Iceland's most famous waterfall. To approach it from the east bank of Hvítá river, we had to trek along a rugged trail. The view was breathtaking, with the upper part of the waterfall appearing larger and wider than ever before. Meanwhile, the lower part was hidden, allowing tourists on the other side to appear like colorfully-dressed Ludo pieces from a distance. We walked alongside the river, marveling at the combined splendor of water and cliffs, before making our way back to the vehicle.
As we drove past Ingólfsfjall mountain, Regína pointed out her grandfather's old farm, which led to a delightful revelation—Kjartan and I were third cousins! Continuing the conversation, they shared stories about long-lost relatives, connecting over their shared roots.
While DNA testing and genealogical research are popular methods for Icelanders to discover new relatives, community, cultural, and academic connections also play a significant role in broadening family circles. Each of these methods, combined with Iceland's close-knit culture, fosters a unique sense of belonging, ensuring that even the most unexpected encounters lead to remarkable connections!
