Students from Pforzheimer traveling to the partnership city of Gernika
From October 20th to 27th, 2023, a group of 20 students and two teachers from Fritz-Erler-Gymnasium embarked on a cultural journey to Gernika, the partner city of Pforzheim. This exchange program, organised by the school, offered the students a unique opportunity to experience the Basque culture firsthand.
During their stay at the Gernikako Institutua, the students participated in classroom lessons, offering insights into different educational systems and teaching styles. However, occasional teacher strikes hindered this aspect of the program. Despite the interruptions, the students were able to immerse themselves in the Basque language, using and improving their skills throughout the trip.
The highlight of the trip was a day excursion to Bilbao, where the students were impressed by the futuristic Guggenheim Museum. They also visited the large market halls in Bilbao, providing a glimpse into the vibrant local life.
In Gernika, the students had the chance to explore the charming city, characterised by elegant streets and charming locales. They visited the Gernika Peace Museum, a memorial to the 1937 bombing, and the Assembly House (Casa de Juntas), a symbol of Basque self-government. Outdoor walks through Gernika’s famous oak tree area added to the cultural experience.
The students also visited the Euskal Herria Museum, where they learned about ancient spiritual beliefs and traditional sports. At the cultural centre ASTRA, they gained more insights into life and work in Gernika.
Accompanied by local teacher Erlantz Gatzaga, the students also had the opportunity to explore the small fishing town of Bermeo.
In the evenings, the students enjoyed the lively street life of Gernika with their new friends, accompanied by "pintxos". Their accommodations were in host families, allowing them to experience the hospitality of the Basque people.
Participation in local festivals, meetings with local officials, or community service projects were likely part of the social events, fostering friendship and cultural exchange. The students returned home with enhanced intercultural competence, a wider European perspective, and lifelong friendships.

During their visit to Gernika, the students expanded their education-and-self-development by gaining insights into different cultural practices and traditions, including local festivals and meetings with officials. Additionally, their travel experiences allowed them to explore various locations, such as Bilbao and Bermeo, enhancing their lifestyle by immersing themselves in the Basque culture and language.
