Spanish Startup Sateliot Makes History With First Direct LEO Satellite-IoT Connection

Spanish startup Sateliot has made history by achieving the first direct connection between a low Earth orbit satellite and a commercial IoT device using 3GPP Release 17 standards. The company is now expanding its constellation and plans to integrate its service with existing T-Mobile and Mint Mobile networks.

Sateliot, based in Spain, has successfully connected a LEO satellite to a commercial IoT device using 3GPP Release 17 standards. This marks a significant milestone, as it's the first time such a connection has been made directly from a LEO satellite.

The company is now looking to the future. It has secured 70 million euros in funding, including an investment from the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT). With this capital, Sateliot plans to launch five additional satellites in October 2026, with a further 16 planned for 2027. The goal is to create a constellation of hundreds of satellites.

Sateliot aims to distribute Nordic's nRF9151 devices to early adopters in 2023. These devices will enable global roaming across both terrestrial and satellite infrastructure, as Sateliot's service will integrate directly with existing T-Mobile and Mint Mobile networks under open 5G protocols.

Sateliot's achievement opens up new possibilities for global connectivity. With recurring contracts worth 250 million euros and a target of 1 billion euros in annual revenue by 2030, the company is poised for significant growth. The upcoming satellite launches and integration with T-Mobile and Mint Mobile networks promise to extend the reach of IoT devices worldwide.
