A Revolutionary Shift in Stroke Care: Neurovascular Network Saxony-Anhalt North

The University Medicine of Magdeburg and its partner clinics have made a groundbreaking move in the realm of emergency care, establishing the Neurovascular Network Saxony-Anhalt North (NeuvaNet SAN) and launching a cutting-edge mobile neuroradiological intervention team. The aim? To revolutionize the treatment of stroke patients across the Saxony-Anhalt North region.

On June 11, 2025, the kick-off event marked the beginning of a transformative future in healthcare provision. The event, held at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Magdeburg, gathered clinics and partners to sign the framework agreement that would shape the future of stroke care.

Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Jochen Heinze, Medical Director of the University Medicine of Magdeburg, underscored the significance of their endeavor, "We're home to the oldest population and annually report around 10,000 strokes. Our mission is to ensure seamless care and drastically reduce intervention time. The new cross-clinical network structure will grant us the ability to deliver top-notch care as swiftly as possible."

The partner clinics involved in this network-changing initiative include Median Clinic NRZ Magdeburg, Seehausen Hospital gGmbH, AMEOS Ost (location Haldensleben), Harzklinikum Dorothea Christiane Erxleben, HELIOS St. Marienberg Clinic Helmstedt, Johanniter Hospital Stendal, Klinikum Magdeburg gGmbH, Salus gGmbH (location Uchtspringe), and the Altmark Clinic gGmbH (locations Gardelegen, Salzwedel). Network partners consist of AOK Saxony-Anhalt, the Hospital Association Saxony-Anhalt, the Medical Service Saxony-Anhalt, and the Association of Municipal and State-Owned Hospitals.

The scientific program of the event revolved around the fundamental aspects of the network, with a focus on certification criteria, standardized treatment processes, and technical and practical implementation of the joint project.

Changing the Stroke Landscape

The objective of NeuvaNet SAN is to provide stroke patients with complex neurovascular diseases quick, quality-assured, and guideline-compliant care. This network unites the expertise of multiple clinics and partners under a strong, shared care claim. The University Medicine of Magdeburg assumes the central steering and coordinating role, acting as a continuous, highly specialized point of contact for emergencies, second opinions, and complex interventions.

The network's tasks include weekly interdisciplinary case conferences, rapid diagnostics and therapy for strokes and other neurovascular diseases, telemedical consultation, development and application of uniform care standards and procedures, quality assurance, certification, and training for network partners, coordination of transfers and interventions within the network, and many more.

A Mobile Intervention Powerhouse

One innovation at the core of this network is the mobile neuro-radiological intervention team of the Clinic for Neuroradiology. Equipped with its own deployment vehicle, this team of specialists brings the expertise of the University Medicine Magdeburg directly to partner sites. This forward-thinking care model makes it possible not only to transfer patients from network clinics to the university clinic but also to perform interventional procedures directly within partner clinics by doctors from the University Medicine Magdeburg, a radical departure from traditional practices. This groundbreaking model was made possible with funding from the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

With the foundation of the network and the commissioning of the mobile neuro-radiological intervention team, the University Medicine Magdeburg and participating clinics have taken a decisive step toward modern emergency care – paving the way for better coordinated and more effective treatment of stroke patients in northern Saxony-Anhalt.

Background on Strokes

A stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is disrupted due to the blockage of an artery. The longer the vessel occlusion persists, the more nerve tissue becomes undersupplied and dies. Symptoms typically include sudden feelings of weakness, paralysis, or numbness on one side of the body, visual disturbances, speech disorders, and more. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Germany and the most common cause of disability in adulthood. Seeking prompt medical attention is crucial for minimizing neurological damage.
