Replicated Triumph: Achievement in Reproduction
In a heartwarming display of solidarity and cultural exchange, the city of Nordhorn, in partnership with Coevorden, welcomed 18 teenagers and two female chaperones from the Ukrainian city of Chuhuiv for a ten-day visit. The initiative for this leisure time event came from the mayor of Chuhuiv, Galyna Minayeva.
The visit program was meticulously planned by volunteers from the Nordhorn city partnership committee, including Achim Haming, Sigrid Maschmeier, Holger Maschmeier, and Elena Baal. Three days of the stay were designed by the municipality of Coevorden.
During their stay, the group embarked on tours of the city centers of Nordhorn and Coevorden, providing a unique insight into Dutch culture. The remaining funds were used to give the teenagers a much-needed break, with activities such as swimming at the Nordhorn Delfinoh and Aqua Mundo, mini-golf, a dance course, and trying bouldering.
The visitors also had the opportunity to explore the Nordhorn Zoo and the Wildlands Zoo in Emmen. A trip to the North Sea and a tour of Burg Bentheim were other highlights of their itinerary. A joint barbecue by the campfire concluded their memorable stay.
The financing of the leisure time was made possible by donations collected during a solidarity concert for Chuhuiv, which raised over 100,000 euros. Initially, two transport vehicles with tools for damage repair in Chuhuiv were purchased with part of the donations.
The three municipalities (Coevorden from the Netherlands, Chuhuiv from Ukraine, and Nordhorn) have been official partner cities since this summer, with contact having existed for around two years. The success of the leisure time event has led to plans for a third event next year.
"It was a great pleasure and honor for us to welcome the teenagers from our new partner city here," said Achim Haming. The statement was a testament to the spirit of unity and friendship that the visit embodied.
Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Chuhuiv, located in the contested region of Kharkiv near the Russian border and frequently targeted by attacks, including drone strikes, served as a poignant reminder of the importance of such cultural exchanges. The name of the person who initiated the leisure time action for young people from the partner city Chuhuiv remains undisclosed.
The guests were accommodated in the MoveInn in the Grafschafter Sport- und Recreation Park in Nordhorn, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all. This visit not only offered a break for the teenagers but also fostered a deeper understanding and connection between the three partner cities.
