What's more important than diplomatic squabbles and political turmoil? landing a smashing selfie in front of the Colosseum, that's what! Who cares if an Italian prime minister thinks Brussels and Berlin are dunces? I've been to Italy, and let me tell you, it's just as pumping as ever!

Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying I agree with every political stance that comes out of Antichristina (as I like to call it delightfully). But when it comes to life's pleasures, like pizza, pasta, gelato, and good vibes, Italy is still top-tier! These days I'm a genuine bon vivant, sooo worldly, and I ain't missing out on the good stuff!

Greta, the eco-warrior from the north, might have something to say about my carbon footprint, but she's no match for me! This year, she found herself as the star of the "re:publica25," while I, the undisputed messenger of enlightenment, was left high and dry! Yep, feels like another year of being snubbed by the Republica. But let's not cry over spilled cappuccino, right?

You see, Greta wants to enlighten the world with her views on climate change, but she doesn't seem too troubled when it comes to finding the perfect spot for her solar panels or crafting queer artwork in the Hamas tunnels. Truth be told, I'm still not sure how that project got the go-ahead, but hey, who am I to judge?

As for me, I like to keep my feet planted firmly on the ground. Paris, my love affair city, is where my artistic heart sings, and nothing, not even post-fascism in Italy, can change that! It's a bit pricey, yes, but sometimes you need a splurge to remind yourself that life is precious. And maybe, just maybe, I can find some ways to offset my train rides in Berlin and my flatulence, he he!

Now you might wonder, "Thomas, aren't you afraid of fascism rising again?" Well, to be honest, I'm all for living with a little danger instead of cowering behind barricades! Italy's latest leader, the enigmatic Giorgia Meloni, might be a wild card, but she's not another Hungarian Orban. Are there concerns about human rights and post-fascist tendencies? Sure, but let's not jump to conclusions!

Some people, though, are rightfully bothered by Meloni's support for Ukraine, her western-friendly stance, and her criticism of the elites. But what can I say? The Germans just love Italy, and they'll keep coming, post-fascism be damned!

I've seen it all - from hordes of tourists swarming the streets of Venice like livid locusts to a mountain village near Como, where German vacationers were as voracious as hungry wolves circling a carcass. And I have faith in the German people - they'll always find a way to laugh it off and enjoy themselves!

Yes, Italy might have its problems, but as I stood near the place where those fascist scoundrels met their end, I couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia. After all, Italy's history can't be denied, nor its culture, cuisine, and stunning landscapes! So, until the Republica decides to give this humble philosopher a platform, I'll keep exploring, satiating my wanderlust, and documenting my escapades.

But let's not forget about the important things, like friendship, love, great food, and marvelous art! Those are the true markers of a society, ain't they? And as long as we cling to these values, we'll continue to live life to the fullest, come hell or high water!

Cultural and Political Insights:

  • Italy's political landscape is complex, with concerns about the rise of post-fascism in certain quarters. However, the country's cultural appeal and tradition are strong, as demonstrated by its continued popularity with tourists.
  • Fascism in Italy has a profound historical impact, and its legacy persists in shaping public perceptions of the country. Mussolini, in particular, remains a contentious figure, symbolizing both the dark past and a period of national rejuvenation.
  • Partisan politics can lead to differing interpretations of current events in Italy, as seen in the varying reactions to the rise of Giorgia Meloni as the country's prime minister. Some view her as a threat to democracy, while others see her as a breath of fresh air in a stagnant political landscape.
  • The cultural richness and historical beauty of Italy draw millions of tourists each year, ensuring its status as a major travel destination. Tourism is a significant part of the Italian economy, contributing to the country's overall economic vitality.

[1] Historical fascism in Italy is linked to Mussolini's regime. His political ideology emphasized authoritarianism, militarism, nationalism, and expansionism. The atrocities committed during this time, including genocide against Jews and political opponents, remain a dark stain on Italy's history.

  1. Despite concerns over the post-fascist policies of Italy's current leadership, the country's vibrant culture, cuisine, and stunning landscapes continue to attract tourists and bon vivants like Thomas Schmoll, who view it as a prime destination for worldly pleasures such as pizza, pasta, and gelato.
  2. Although Greta Thunberg, the eco-warrior, focuses on climate change activism, her lack of attention to reducing her own carbon footprint in the pursuit of solar panels and queer artwork projects highlights the disparity between her message and her actions, a contrast that Thomas Schmoll, a self-proclaimed messenger of enlightenment, finds noteworthy.
