Reichstag's €319M Renovation Unveils Foster's Modern Masterpiece

The iconic Reichstag in Berlin has undergone a remarkable transformation, with a comprehensive renovation costing around €319 million. The project, one of the most significant in post-reunification Germany, has created a new plenary chamber, offices, party rooms, and a press lobby, all designed by renowned architect Sir Norman Foster.

The Reichstag, one of Germany's most famous buildings, was comprehensively rebuilt in the 1990s to become the seat of the German Bundestag. An international competition held in 1992 resulted in Norman Foster winning the redesign, with the condition of including a dome. Foster's 23.5-meter-high glass dome, completed in April 1999, is not only an architectural highlight but also a symbol of transparency, allowing visitors to look directly into the plenary chamber. The renovation covered a gross area of 61,000 square meters and met the tight schedule despite its complex tasks.

The newly designed building is now the centerpiece of the redesigned government district, with nearby structures like the Paul-Loebe House and the Federal Chancellery forming an architectural ensemble. Foster's design work for the renovation, presented in June 1994, has created a modern, functional space that accommodates members and guests while preserving the historic character of the Reichstag.

The renovation of the Reichstag building, completed in 1999, has not only transformed the historic landmark into a modern parliamentary seat but also created a symbol of unity and transparency for the German republic. The glass dome, a testament to Norman Foster's vision, attracts millions of visitors each year, making the Reichstag a must-see attraction in Berlin.
