Got a sick kid? No worries! Starting October 1st, you can skip the hospital trips and long waits by opting for a video consultation. The Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Hesse (KVH) is bringing this service to life in the pediatric on-call duty, based on successful two-year trials.
Armin Beck, the deputy chairman of KVH, shares the good news. "We've been finalizing the testing phase, and it's been a massive success! Our aim is to save sick children and their parents from lengthy drives and waiting rooms."
So, how does this work? Parents of unwell children can now schedule appointments by dialing 116117, between 9 am and 7 pm. For instance, during extended weekends like Corpus Christi (19th to 22nd June). The teams then evaluate whether symptoms are suitable for video treatment and set up an appointment with a pediatrician. Parents join the consultation via a link, and if necessary, guided to the nearest pediatric on-call center for physical examinations.
Not all cases qualify for online treatment – high fevers or severe injuries need immediate attention. However, patients with rashes, conjunctivitis, stomach bugs, or prescription requests can greatly benefit from video consultations.
The service first underwent testing during the October long weekend of 2023. Since then, approximately 1,500 video treatments have been completed. Starting October 1st, the offer becomes permanent, available on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 pm to midnight, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 7 pm to midnight, and on weekends from 7 am to 7 pm.
And here's the cherry on top – this emergency care via video might soon extend to adults too, according to Beck!
