Most visitors to Greece hail predominantly from Germany.
Greece, a destination renowned for its sun-kissed beaches and ancient history, continues to attract a significant number of tourists, particularly from Germany. In 2021, over 5.7 million German tourists ventured to Greece, marking a 12.7% increase compared to 2023, making them the largest and most important group of tourists for the country, even surpassing British visitors.
The influx of German tourists contributed to a record-breaking year for tourism in Greece, with approximately 36 million tourists in total. According to the Greek Tourism Confederation's research institute, INSETE, this trend is likely to continue in 2022.
The northern Aegean Sea, home to picturesque islands such as Lesbos, Chios, and Samos, experienced a 40% increase in tourists last year. In total, tourists accounted for around 230 million overnight stays and generated an impressive turnover of over 20 billion euros.
Regional differences in costs for tourists are evident. On average, a visit to the popular island of Crete last year cost around 770 euros, while in the region of Epirus, tourists only required a budget of approximately 192 euros. Tourism contributes significantly to Greece's economy, accounting for almost 30% of the country's gross domestic product.
Greece's appeal to German tourists stems from factors such as historical and cultural significance, climate and natural beauty, accessibility, and economic opportunities. The country's rich history, stunning landscapes, and ease of access have long attracted Germans seeking a sun-soaked getaway steeped in culture and mythology.
