Journeying for the optimal northern lights display demands extensive travel, yet the experience is incredibly rewarding
In the heart of the Finnmark region of Norway, nestled within the small commune of Alta, an exciting adventure unfolded for a traveler seeking a unique winter experience. This journey was guided by Tore and Vegard Karlstrøm, the father-and-son team who own and operate the local arctic adventure company, Spor Guiding.
The traveler found themselves immersed in the rugged beauty of the region, taking in the breathtaking vistas of fjords, peaks, glaciers, valleys, and even a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean. One of the highlights of the trip was the two mountains they climbed, one with a 600-meter ascent and another with a steeper and more technical climb.
During the expedition, the traveler participated in ski touring, a subgenre of skiing that involves skiing up the mountain before riding down. This challenging activity was made possible with the help of a team of Alaskan huskies, each with its own distinct role and personality. The traveler learned the quirks of these dogs and the rules and etiquette of sled dog racing from Marianne and Arne, two of the best sled dog racers on earth, having won world championships and some of the most prestigious races in Europe.
The traveler spent two days at Parken Gård Husky, a remote sled dog farm owned by Marianne and Arne. Here, they experienced a unique lifestyle, as the traveler's dogs dug trenches and rested while waiting for lunch. The traveler also had the opportunity to learn how to drive a sled and was warmly welcomed into a remote cabin with a fire, sausages, and a seating area made of snow and animal pelts.
The destination of this adventure was the tiny village of Langfjordbotn, population 114. Here, the traveler witnessed a stunning sunset, with the sky painted in a muted pink-orange hue. The highlight of the trip, however, was the sighting of the northern lights. Although the traveler had hoped to see this phenomena, it was only on the final night that they were treated to a spectacular display, which seemed like a farewell or a 'see you soon' before the traveler's return drive to Alta and flights back to the U.S.
Tore, a leading avalanche expert, and Vegard, who coaches the Icelandic national cross-country team, ensured a safe and enjoyable trip. The traveler also had the opportunity to capture the beauty of the northern lights on camera, laughing, hooting, and hollering in awe at the spectacle.
This trip was organised by Klättermusen Experiences, a sustainable adventure travel company, ensuring that the traveler's journey was not only exciting but also environmentally friendly. The traveler returned home with memories of a lifetime, having experienced the raw beauty and thrill of the Arctic winter.
