Indore, a city in Madhya Pradesh, has been grappling with a significant rise in dog bite cases, according to data spanning several years. The city, known for its vibrant culture and bustling streets, has seen a steep increase in dog bite incidents, with the Hukumchand Polyclinic Hospital reporting around 4,500 cases monthly.

The primary cause of this surge can be attributed to a large stray dog population and insufficient sterilization efforts to control their growth. Areas such as Chandan Nagar, Musakhedi, Dwarkapuri, Khajrana, and Vijay Nagar have been particularly affected. The total stray dog population is estimated to be around 300,000, with the city currently sterilizing only 30 to 35 dogs daily, far less than the approximate 140 dogs per day needed to effectively manage the population growth.

The rising dog bite cases have created a significant public health concern, with many victims requiring anti-rabies treatment. The hospital sees mostly Category III wounds—severe bites or scratches needing immediate treatment to prevent rabies fatalities.

To address this problem, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has begun implementing sterilization and vaccination drives. However, these efforts lag behind the needed scale. Animal welfare advocates support the establishment of humane dog shelters, which provide protection for both dogs and humans and have been found to reduce dog bite incidents sustainably. These shelters offer refuge from cruelty and help manage stray dog populations responsibly.

In 2021, Indore recorded 32,325 dog bite cases, a figure that rose to 40,249 in 2022. The year 2024 saw the city log a staggering 58,508 dog bite cases, the highest among all major cities in the state. In 2023, the city reported 43,738 cases, a repetition of the 2023 figure.

Comparatively, Bhopal has recorded the lowest number of dog bite cases. Indore significantly outnumbers other cities like Jabalpur, Gwalior, Bhopal, Ujjain, and Ratlam in terms of dog bite cases.

In the first six months of 2025, Indore has already logged over 30,000 fresh dog bite cases, indicating a continuation of the trend. The city's struggle with dog bite cases serves as a reminder of the importance of aggressive sterilisation, vaccination drives, and public awareness campaigns to prevent this public health hazard.
