You know what they say, old habits die hard! That certainly seems to be the case in baby names as Matheo and Ella have once again taken the top spots for first names in Saarland, according to the latest survey by the Society for the German Language (GfdS) for the year 2024. Let's just say these names had a serious hold on the number one spot in 2023 too!

As for second and third place, for the boys, we've got Elias and Noah vying for the honors. Meanwhile, Emilia and Mia are a hit for the girls, rounding out the top three.

But if you think Saarland's the only place with its own unique baby name trends, think again! Nationwide in Germany, Sophia and Noah remain the top choices for parents, making it two consecutive years they've taken the country by storm. Andrea Ewels, CEO of GfdS in Wiesbaden, chimed in with her thoughts, attributing their enduring popularity to their distinctive sound.

Since 1977, the GfdS has been dropping an annual list of the most frequently given German first names, and that's a fact that hasn't changed. The data is compiled from approximately 750 local registration offices and around 900,000 entries were provided to the society, resulting in nearly 92 percent of all first names given in Germany in 2024 being tracked, per GfdS report.

P.S. Props to Sophia and Noah for keeping their stronghold on the baby name charts, but keep an eye out for a more comprehensive list from the official GfdS publication.
