Hiking Enthusiasts Shouldn't Miss the Petroleum and Anderson Lakes Trail Scenic Journey in Aspen

Embark on an exciting adventure to the off-the-beaten-path hike of Petroleum and Anderson Lakes, nestled in the stunning Colorado Rockies just outside Aspen. We're on a quest to uncover the best hikes with minimal crowds, and this hidden gem checks all the boxes.

We crave tranquility among nature, sothe solitude offered by this trail, with only a handful of hikers encountered during our trek, was a breath of fresh air. The hike boasts a moderate to challenging difficulty level, owing to the high altitude, as the trail commences at 11,200 feet and ascends nearly 1,000 feet in under 2 miles.

Exploring Petroleum and Anderson Lakes

The trail follows the Anderson Creek, gradually climbing an old jeep road (now disused for driving). You'll traverse through a fir forest, witnessing erstwhile cabins predominantly in ruins, before emerging into the alpine tundra. Remember, the alpine tundra is incredibly delicate; stay on the marked trail and practice "leave no trace."

After about a mile, the trail forks. If you veer left, you'll reach Anderson Lake in another 1/4 mile. This lake boasts crystal-clear blue water, and we visited in July, finding snow piles surrounding the lake despite the bright sun and warmer temperatures.

To reach Petroleum Lake, retrace your steps to the fork and take the right fork this time. Petroleum Lake is approximately 3/4 mile from here, marked by gorgeous alpine meadows teeming with wildflowers. You'll pass two ponds on the right, which are not Petroleum Lake. Cross a small stream, and the trail will curve left and steepen dramatically. There's a steep ascent for about 200 yards before Petroleum Lake comes into view. This is where we found the ultimate tranquility, as the absence of birds and distant hum of cars allowed us to truly appreciate nature's peace.

The trail continues up to the right to a small pond and then climbs further up to a saddle providing extraordinary, awe-inspiring views over the Collegiate Wilderness and rocky knolls. This ascent is steep, but it's worth the effort for the breathtaking views. To return to the trailhead, merely retrace your steps. We suggest using hiking poles for the descent to protect your knees, especially if you have any knee issues.

Tips for Hiking

  • Start the hike early in the day to avoid afternoon storms, which are frequent and can be dangerous due to the trail’s exposure above tree level.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and wearing layers to combat the sun's harsh rays at high elevations. Bring a rain jacket and extra warm layers, as the weather can change rapidly.

Directions for Driving

To reach the trailhead, you'll require a 4x4 vehicle (or add 3 miles each way to your hike). From Aspen, drive east for about 10 miles and turn right onto Lincoln Gulch Road. Drive another 6.5 miles to Portal Campground – a favorite camping spot of ours. Now, you'll need a 4x4 vehicle. Continue driving for another 3.3 miles to the first right fork and follow it. Cross a creek, and just beyond, you'll find a tiny parking area to leave your vehicle. The last 3+ miles require a 4x4, but they're described as an "easy introduction to four-wheel driving."

Fishing

Fishing enthusiasts should be aware that Petroleum and Anderson Lakes may not be ideal for beginners due to the picky nature of the fish, which tend to be easily spooked. Expect to catch fewer fish compared to fishing time but enjoy the stunning scenery nonetheless. For expert anglers, the lakes offer an exceptional fishing experience.

Of all the hikes we've embarked on, this one remains our favorite. We plan to revisit Petroleum and Anderson Lakes in the future to once again immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature.
