UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany Celebrate 20th Anniversary with Tours and Concerts on June 1
On the occasion of the 20th UNESCO World Heritage Day, several sites in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and other regions in Germany are hosting a series of tours, concerts, and activities to promote cultural exchange and appreciation. The theme for this year's celebration is "Communicate, Connect, Inspire."
In Saarland, the Völklingen Ironworks will open its doors for an art trail, children's tours, time travel exhibits, a sound walk, and more. The entrance fee for the tours is €5, and the "True Size of Africa" exhibition in the Blast Furnace Hall will offer a discounted rate of €9 on Sunday.
The Schum Sites in Rhineland-Palatinate - which includes Speyer, Worms, and Mainz - invite visitors to free tours, highlighting the region's rich Jewish history. In Worms, the Rashi House Jewish Museum is open to the public, and tourists can learn about the significance of the Schum community using original 14th-century sources. Speyer features musical performances by Klezmers Techter and the Jewish community choir, as well as tours of the "Beith Shalom" synagogue, the Schum community center, and the cathedral. Prices for the tours vary between €0 and €15, and families can participate in a scavenger hunt where children receive keychains upon completion.
Mainz offers free tours of the Old Jewish Cemetery "Judensand," one of the oldest and largest medieval Jewish cemeteries in Europe. The tours provide information about the personalities buried there, the meaning of gravestone symbols, and burial and mourning rituals. All male participants must wear a head covering during the tour.
In Bingen, located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a variety of free events are planned, including discovery tours, museum visits, harbor demonstrations, and historical walks. Meanwhile, Trier - Germany's oldest city - is hosting an audio walk that allows participants to explore Roman history and the city's architectural landmarks.
For those interested in exploring the region's wine culture, the Mainzer WeinUfer festival will take place along the Rhine in Mainz from May 29 to June 1, 2025. In the Rhine-Nahe corner, a cultural-historical tour with Father Rhine will occur on May 30, 2025, while the Saar Wine Festival is scheduled for the first weekend in September 2025. Food and drink tours, as well as sightseeing cruises along the Rhine River, are also popular options for tourists looking to experience the UNESCO World Heritage Site area in Rhineland-Palatinate.
For specific details on UNESCO World Heritage Day events in Speyer, Worms, Mainz, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Bingen, and Trier, it is recommended to visit local tourism websites or contact event organizers directly.
The Commission, in line with its commitment to worker safety, has also adopted a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation during a detour to the Schum Sites in Rhineland-Palatinate, where visitors can participate in a scavenger hunt for a family-friendly excursion involving the protection of cultural artefacts, just like the safeguarding and preservation of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany. After a fulfilling day of exploring historical sites and engaging in cultural tours, one can unwind at home-and-garden themed villas nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Rhineland-Palatinate, offering a serene lifestyle experience amidst architectural wonders, or even venture into the next city for a stimulating travel adventure.
