Half a century of the Gütersloh Folk Culture Group
In the heart of Gütersloh, a city steeped in history and tradition, the Folklore Circle has been a staple of the community's association life for five decades. Founded 50 years ago, this vibrant group has dedicated itself to preserving and developing cultural traditions, reaching far beyond the borders of Gütersloh.
The Folklore Circle is known for its members who don traditional costumes from Westphalia and other German settlement areas. These costumes, sewn according to historical templates, add a touch of authenticity to the performances. The group's aim is not only to celebrate these traditions but also to build bridges between people and cultures.
Over the years, the Folklore Circle has travelled to countries such as Morocco, Spain, France, the Czech Republic, and Belgium, sharing their love for music and dance. Their journey culminated in a recent festival, which coincided with Gütersloh's 200th city anniversary. Nine groups from seven countries, including the Netherlands, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, and various regions of Germany, were invited to the celebration.
The festival featured diverse performances in the city centre, an impressive parade, and a public ecumenical service in the Apostelkirche, described as unique and impressive. The climax was a ball in the large hall of the Stuwe-Weißenberg dance school, attended by over 200 guests, including Mayor Matthias Trepper. The dance floor was a spectacle of colour, with dance pairs of various ages, from two to 85, demonstrating that music and dance can connect people and overcome boundaries.
One of the highlights of the festival was the colourful scene of festively dressed people singing a common song for peace. The Folklore Circle promotes peace and international understanding, a testament to their mission to build bridges between cultures.
The Folklore Circle invites anyone who enjoys dancing or making music to join them. They meet on Tuesdays from 7:15 PM to 9 PM at the Forum of the Carl-Miele-Berufskolleg Gütersloh, Wilh.-Wolf-Str./ Corner Wiesenstraße. For more information, call 05205 / 70987.
Initially, the Folklore Circle was a youth group. Today, people of all ages dance and make music in the Folklore Circle Gütersloh, making it a truly inclusive and welcoming community. The Folklore Circle's task is to continue preserving and developing cultural traditions, and to continue building bridges between people and cultures, one dance at a time.
