Greek Orthodox believers mark their yearly tradition on Bozcaada island
The Ayazma Monastery, nestled on the picturesque Bozcaada Island in Çanakkale, Turkey, was the site of a significant gathering on July 26. This annual event, known as the Ayazma fair, draws a large number of participants from both Turkey and abroad.
The Ayazma Monastery holds historical and religious importance, especially during Hagia Paraskevi Day. It is closely associated with the Greek Orthodox community and local legend relating to Saint Paraskevi, a young woman who was kept under watch at the monastery after falling in love, symbolising themes of faith and devotion.
Historically, Bozcaada was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1455 under Sultan Mehmed II. While the region experienced periods of conflict, the monastery remained a centre for Orthodox Christian worship and cultural identity amid shifting political dynamics.
On Hagia Paraskevi Day, this site becomes the focal point of annual rituals and celebrations that preserve the island’s Greek Orthodox heritage, drawing the community together in religious observance and local tradition.
This year's gathering was a special occasion, with Patriarch Bartholomew I, the leader of the historic monastery's ceremony, in attendance. Kyrillos Sykis, the metropolitan of Gökçeada and Bozcaada, also graced the event, alongside Nikos Androulakis, leader of Greece’s socialist party PASOK, and Konstantinos Koutras, Greece’s Consul General in Istanbul.
Several clergymen from abroad also participated in the event, further emphasising the monastery's international significance.
The story of Paraskevi is a part of the local legend associated with the Ayazma Monastery. Heartbroken and never reunited with him, Paraskevi died of sorrow. People come to the wishing fountain, also known as the well of wishes, to pray and make their wishes, believing that Paraskevi's spirit intercedes on their behalf. According to local legend, the fountain was created in Paraskevi's memory.
