Goodwood Art Foundation Unveils Visionary Landscape Design

The Goodwood Art Foundation, a new cultural hub set to open in May 2025, is set to redefine the art-viewing experience with its innovative landscape design. The project, headed by renowned landscape architect Dan Pearson, aims to create a harmonious blend of contemporary art, horticulture, education, and food within a naturalistic and inspiring outdoor environment.

Located on the historic Goodwood Estate in West Sussex, UK, the Goodwood Art Foundation represents a significant cultural venture. The 70-acre site will feature galleries and outdoor spaces, designed to be both beautiful and immersive, with a seamless connection between the natural environment and the art on display.

Dan Pearson's design focuses on thoughtful navigation through forest glades and strategic planting to complement and frame sculptures. This approach encourages visitors to experience art in harmony with the landscape, allowing artworks to shine through forest glades and open up spectacular views across the grounds.

The landscape will serve as a backdrop for a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to public year-round access, with programs curated to engage people of all ages and abilities. The Goodwood Art Foundation's mission rests on art, environment, and education pillars, fostering creativity, wellbeing, and lifelong learning.

Stephen A. Schwarzman, the donor, is proud to support the Goodwood Art Foundation, particularly its historic landscape. Dan Pearson, who recently designed Sissinghurst's Mediterranean-inspired Delos garden, is excited about collaborating on a project that balances contemporary landscape design, increased biodiversity, and exceptional contemporary art.

The Goodwood Art Foundation will feature a selection of carefully curated international artworks, with designated paths providing access to rest, contemplation areas, and art installations. Visitors will be able to explore a range of environments, including ancient woodland and wildflower meadows, designed to reflect the wild landscapes found in the South Downs.

The Western Amphitheatre will be part of the Goodwood Art Foundation's gardens, hosting schools, groups, and open-air performances in the summer. The design will incorporate 24 evolving seasonal 'moments' to highlight different elements of the garden and artworks throughout the year.

The Goodwood Estate is home to one of Europe's largest lowland organic farms, a historic motor circuit, a Battle of Britain airfield, one of the country's oldest cricket grounds, on-site holiday accommodation, a health club, and a sustainable restaurant with a seasonal menu. The Goodwood Art Foundation is set to become another exciting addition to this diverse estate.

Rachel Whiteread, the Goodwood Art Foundation's first artist to be featured, has expressed her appreciation for the ethos of providing audiences with the opportunity to experience contemporary art integrated into a carefully designed natural environment. The Goodwood Art Foundation is poised to become a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
