Exploratory Trek Across Tajikistan's Southern Pamir Mountains

In the heart of September, a team of adventurous explorers embarked on a journey across Tajikistan's remote southern Pamir mountains. The 13-hour rest in a sleeping bag after a night above 4000m elevation saw the leader feeling a bit better and psyched for the final destination.

The first night, however, was extremely cold, with temperatures inside the tent reaching -10 Celsius. Despite the harsh conditions, the team decided to set up camp near Oqkul, a high lake at the foot of the pass.

The pass to their final destination, the desert settlement of Bulunkul, was long and lacked trails. The team, undeterred, focused on a long glacier that led to another high ridge, considered more feasible and attractive.

The team's leader admitted to not feeling well, acknowledging that four weeks in the Pamirs had taken a toll. One of the team members, Kim, expressed concern and asked about the leader's health.

The team's expedition, scheduled for August 2026, invites others to join an exploratory trek. The itinerary, limited to 12 participants, includes a 3-day horse riding trek through the Pamir mountains, hiking excursions, and a VIP scenic train journey. The journey promises to offer remote valleys, mountain terrain, and cultural immersion in Tajikistan’s high-altitude wilderness.

As the team ventured further, they entered a valley with no hiking routes marked and an unnamed pass of 4770m high. The camp surroundings were stark and unsettling, making the team feel vulnerable.

Despite the challenges, the team reached the top of the pass and saw Kongur, an almost 8000m high peak in Chinese Xinjiang, on the horizon. They considered a 5300m high peak for climbing but decided against it due to steep, loose, and rotten rock.

The team's journey was not without its surreal moments. A beach holiday at 4250m above sea level, while not directly related to the trek, added an unexpected twist to their adventure.

Bulunkul, their final destination, is officially the coldest inhabited place in Central Asia, with a recorded low of -63 Celsius. Night temperatures in the Pamirs during September decrease dramatically.
