EU Urged to Boost Military Aid to Ukraine as War Intensifies
The EU is being urged to significantly boost its military support for Ukraine, as the conflict with Russia intensifies and the risk of a Russian victory grows. Despite previous commitments, EU funding for Kyiv remains a fraction of what was mobilised for other crises, raising concerns about Europe's resolve and the potential consequences of a Russian win.
Russia's stepped-up airstrikes on Ukrainian cities have resulted in ever higher civilian casualties, highlighting the urgent need for more military support. The EU must increase financing for both short- and long-term military aid, including air defense systems, integrating Ukraine into the European defense technological and industrial base, and supporting an emergency arms industry program funded by frozen Russian assets. This will help strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and increase its chances of winning the war.
Without such measures, Europe risks prolonging the conflict, exposing itself to greater danger, and emboldening Moscow to push further against Europe's eastern borders. Experts warn that a long war plays to Russia's strengths and could erode public support at home for Ukraine's cause. Moreover, EU enlargement alone is not enough to bring peace or security to Ukraine. Europe needs a clear plan to end the war, rather than relying solely on enlargement for security.
The EU must dramatically increase its military support for Ukraine to enable its victory and prevent a Russian win. This includes providing more air defense systems, integrating Ukraine into the European defense base, and supporting an emergency arms industry program. Failure to do so could have severe consequences for Europe's security and risk prolonging the war, playing into Russia's hands.
