Escaping the Summer Heat: Accommodations at the Brothel
Exploring the Stunning Hooker Valley Track: A Family-Friendly Alpine Adventure
The Hooker Valley Track in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park offers a breathtaking alpine experience for visitors of all ages and fitness levels. This well-maintained trail, spanning approximately 10.6 km (6.6 miles) roundtrip, provides stunning views of snowcapped peaks, glaciers, and two glacial lakes – Mueller Lake and Hooker Lake.
The trail, which takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete, including photo stops, is an easy to moderate walk, more of a walk than a hike. It crosses two swing bridges and is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, making it an ideal destination for families with children.
For an overnight journey, essentials would include proper footwear suitable for gravel paths and boardwalks, weather-appropriate clothing, plenty of water and snacks, sun protection, backpacks, a basic first aid kit, and any personal medication. Since there is no access to drinking water or bathrooms along the trail, it is advisable to hydrate and use the facilities at the trailhead car park near Wild Horse Hill Campground before starting the hike.
Accommodation arrangements can be made at Wild Horse Hill Campground or nearby Mount Cook Village, which is about 10 minutes away by car. If you choose to stay overnight at the Hooker Hut, located on the Hooker Valley Track, visitors are required to bring their own pots/pans and a lighter. The hut offers eight beds, a fireplace, and a gas stove, and has a detached toilet and a woodshed full of dry wood.
The Hooker Hut also provides remarkable stargazing opportunities on clear nights, offering a unique experience for families. The landscape around the hut is beautiful, making it an ideal location for photography.
To plan your walk, the Plan My Walk app is a useful resource. It allows users to check weather conditions, gear needs, and create a trip plan. Additionally, users can inform someone about their planned trip and expected return time, ensuring a safer journey.
In winter, Hooker Lake may have icebergs and partially freeze over, adding an extra layer of beauty to this already stunning track. However, alpine weather can change quickly, so it is essential to check the weather forecast before setting out on your journey.
The Hooker Hut walk is suitable for first-time trampers, and sports shoes are acceptable. So, gear up, and prepare for a memorable family adventure in the heart of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.
