Entrepreneur Bankole Dunsin's Journey: Establishing Enterprises in Rwanda as a Combined Remote Worker

Bankole Dunsin, a self-proclaimed "hybrid nomad," has been actively running food and fitness technology businesses in Rwanda since his move to the country in late 2021. His ventures, which include food and fitness tech startups, have been a significant part of his dynamic, cross-sector portfolio.

Dunsin's first business idea in Rwanda was a street food bistro, offering Nigerian staples like jollof rice alongside casual dishes. The target audience for the bistro was primarily Nigerians living in Rwanda and young Rwandans interested in trying international foods. The bistro operated for about a year, with events keeping it busy on weekends, but the departure of some partners left too much work and cost on Dunsin's plate, eventually leading to its closure.

However, Dunsin did not let this setback deter him. He shifted his interest to a tech-based fitness service, targeting Kigali's small but growing middle class. The service created customised meal plans for people's health and training goals, with premium packages catering to clients seeking one-on-one coaching and exclusive recipes.

The competition in the tech-based fitness service was minimal, but awareness was a challenge. Dunsin, with his experience in running the restaurant, applied this knowledge to his work in activation campaigns for artists at WeTalkSound, where he now works as the creative director.

Dunsin found Rwanda's order and predictability appealing, and its immigration process led him to apply for the W2 Entrepreneurship visa. Upon approval, the government checks in on the business to ensure it meets standards, is properly registered, and complies with tax rules.

Bankole Dunsin's latest project is Moonshot by WeTalkSound, a full-stack creative agency. The agency's website will return to Lagos on October 15-16. Prior to this, Dunsin worked on the ATSG project by Nigerian rapper Reminisce.

As for future plans, while specific strategies or expansions for his food and tech businesses have not been published, his continued presence in Rwanda as a hybrid nomad and active business builder suggests ongoing development and potential growth aligned with the region's expanding digital economy and cross-border mobility incentives.
