Austin, Texas, the live music capital of the world, is not just for adults. The city offers a plethora of free and fun activities for kids, making it an ideal destination for families seeking outdoor and cultural experiences.

Every Wednesday morning in June and July, Tuneful Tales takes place at The Austin Central Library from 10-noon. Children can enjoy free entertainment, including musicians, storytellers, an "instrument zoo", and magicians. For those seeking an art-filled adventure, exploring Austin's famous murals is a must. Murals such as "I love you so much", "Willie Nelson for president", and "Hi, How are you?" offer perfect photo opportunities and creative stimulation.

For a more active outing, Mount Bonnell, a kid-friendly hiking spot, offers a scenic overlook with breathtaking views of downtown Austin and Lake Austin. Zilker Park, a classic family destination, offers spacious green areas for picnics, playgrounds, and activities like kayaking and riding the Zilker Eagle train. In winter, the park features the popular Trail of Lights, which is free to enjoy.

Austin's community spirit shines through in its free festivals. In addition to the Independence Day and Star-Spangled Fest events, the city offers inclusive and fun environments at events like the Taylor Pride Music & Art Festival and the Pride Picnic at Pease Park.

For those seeking educational experiences, the Texas State Capitol Building offers free tours. The Zilker Hillside Theatre is performing Matilda from July 7-August 12, every Thursday-Sunday evening, with free admission and picnic options.

Water lovers will enjoy the spring-fed pools, Barton Springs and Deep Eddy. Barton Springs Pool, the oldest pool in Texas, is free to swim at own risk from 5-8am, and costs $2-$9 for others depending on age and residency. Life jackets and floaties are allowed at either end of the pool. Kids under 1 and veterans always have free admission. Deep Eddy Pool, open from 11-8pm every day, has the same entrance fees as Barton Springs.

Every summer night (May-September), 1.5 million Mexican Free-Tailed Bats fly out from underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk, offering a natural spectacle not to be missed.

The family-friendly Austin City Limits Music Festival happens over 2 weekends usually in October, with kids 8 and under admitted for free. For a unique and entertaining experience, Chicken Shit Bingo is played every Sunday from 4-8pm at The Little Longhorn Saloon, where folks play bingo with chickens and the winner goes home with cash.

New additions to the city's kid-friendly attractions include the Alliance Children's Garden, a 2-acre play area in downtown Austin with rock walls, slides, a sand pit, swings, giant ants to climb, and an incredible climbing tower. Next door to the Alliance Children's Garden is the Liz Carpenter splash pad.

Maxwell, a local child, particularly enjoys the Thinkery, a museum of creativity, innovation, and play. Maxwell favours the wind room, where airplanes can be flown and balls can zoom through a wind maze, the giant lite brite room, rainbow maze, water room, market, outdoor playground, and water feature.

These activities are well-loved by locals for being engaging, family-oriented, and budget-friendly, providing both entertainment and educational experiences throughout the summer and beyond.

A family seeking a lifestyle that combines art and nature could visit the Alliance Children's Garden, a child-friendly play area, and the nearby Liz Carpenter splash pad, both located in downtown Austin.
