In a groundbreaking development, researchers have found a novel treatment that shows impressive results in controlling hard-to-tackle high blood pressure cases. The new kid on the block? Lorundrostat - an aldosterone synthase inhibitor that's been proven safe and effective in a large-scale clinical trial.
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a global issue that significantly boosts the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Resistant hypertension, a form of high blood pressure that's not affected by multiple medications, affects up to 15% of individuals with hypertension.
Lorundrostat works by targeting and inhibiting CYP11B2, the enzyme that drives aldosterone production. Aldosterone, a hormone that regulates blood pressure, can become dysregulated in patients with resistant hypertension, leading to persistently high blood pressure levels.
The study, presented at the 34th European Meeting on Hypertension and Cardiovascular Protection, involved a diverse group of patients with uncontrolled or resistant hypertension. The findings are yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Manish Saxena, MD, Clinical Co-Director of the William Harvey Heart Centre at Queen Mary University of London and a Hypertension Specialist, spoke to Medical News Today.
"Despite the variety of treatments available, more than half of adults with hypertension worldwide are not reaching their blood pressure goal. Aldosterone pathway plays a pivotal role in blood pressure regulation, leading to complications such as heart failure and kidney problems," explained Saxena.
"In the Launch-HTN trial, we explored the safety and effectiveness of lorundostat, which belongs to a new class of drugs called aldosterone synthase inhibitors that block the production of hormone aldosterone from the adrenal glands."
Lorundrostat was safe and lowered blood pressure consistently across all patient groups, marking a significant milestone in the development of the first targeted aldosterone synthase inhibitor for these conditions.
"The Launch-HTN trial is the largest phase 3 hypertension study with a novel drug," said Saxena. "We tested lorundostat in a large, diverse patient population recruited globally and found that it has a good safety profile and lowered blood pressure consistently in all of our patient groups."
