Elbe River Ministers Agree on Sustainable Water, Sediment Management
Environmental ministers from the Elbe region and federal government representatives gathered for the 9th Elbe River Basin Conference. The conference focused on managing water quantity and sediment sustainably in the Elbe River Basin District (ERBD Elbe).
The conference agreed on establishing sustainable, transregional water management and further implementing the sediment management concept in the ERBD Elbe. This comes as the Elbe catchment area faces natural water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change and increasing usage demands.
Discussions centered around transferring water from the Elbe in connection with the 2020 coal phase-out and regional flow regime changes in Lusatia. The RBD Elbe, responsible for implementing the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Flood Risk Management Directive (FRMD), emphasized the importance of the existing sediment management concept for pollutant removal.
Ministers welcomed the examination of joint financing concepts and a legal study to clarify the legal framework conditions for sediment management. Extreme events like floods and low water can lead to increased substance pollution and remobilization of pollutants in the Elbe.
The 9th Elbe River Basin Conference concluded with a commitment to sustainable water management and sediment management in the ERBD Elbe. The next conference, chaired by Christian Meyer, the Environmental Minister of Niedersachsen, will take place in 2025, involving the Elbe states and federal government representatives.
