Eighteenth CII Annual Tourism Summit in 2024

In the heart of New Delhi, on Wednesday, 18 December 2024, the tourism industry will gather for the 18th CII Annual Tourism Summit. This year's event promises to be a significant one, as India's tourism sector continues to flourish and surpass pre-pandemic levels.

According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, the tourism sector's contribution to India's GDP reached an impressive ₹19.13 trillion in 2023, marking a nearly 10% increase over pre-pandemic levels. This growth is reflected in the employment sector as well, with tourism-related jobs growing by 10% to 43 million.

Foreign exchange earnings (FEEs) from tourism also saw a substantial increase, exceeding ₹2.3 lakh crore in 2023, a 65.7% rise compared to the previous year. This surge is largely due to the influx of over 9.2 million foreign tourists, a 43.5% year-on-year increase.

The summit will focus on enhancing ease of doing business to streamline the hospitality sector, and strategies to boost inbound tourism through integrated marketing and strategic international partnerships will be discussed. The summit will also showcase state-level best practices to foster regional collaboration.

India's aspirations are high, with the country aiming to rank among the top 10 global tourism destinations by 2030 and the top 3 by 2047. To achieve this, the summit aims to chart a strategic roadmap for transforming India's tourism potential into actionable outcomes.

Government initiatives like the 'Incredible India' campaign, Swadesh Darshan, Dekho Apna Desh, Vibrant Village Programme, and facilitative visa regimes have bolstered India's global appeal. Strategies targeting niche segments like MICE, medical, adventure, and rural tourism aim to position India as a year-round destination.

To realize the full potential of the tourism sector, measures towards strengthening tourism business such as easing regulatory and licensing burdens, reducing compliance costs, efficient approval systems, and fostering investments are critical. The summit will also explore building a globally competitive workforce and leveraging digitization to optimize India's travel ecosystem.

Tourism is more than just an economic driver; it is one of India's significant soft powers, driving economic growth and societal well-being. The summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss and strategize ways to harness this power effectively.

A key highlight of the summit will be the launch of the CII-EY Report on Employment Landscape in Tourism and Hospitality Industry. This report is expected to provide valuable insights into the current state of the industry and offer recommendations for future growth.

As India continues to open its doors to the world, the 18th CII Annual Tourism Summit 2024 promises to be an exciting event, marking a significant step forward in India's journey towards becoming a global tourism powerhouse.
