Effective Drug Demonstrates Promising Outcome in Control of High Blood Pressure

Title: A Groundbreaking Treatment for Tough-to-Tame High Blood Pressure: Lorundrostat Shines in Major Clinical Trials

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a global issue that significantly boosts the risks of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Resistant hypertension, a form of high blood pressure that is unaffected by multiple medications, affects as many as 15% of individuals with hypertension.

The recent Phase 3 Launch-HTN study has brought some good news for those struggling with uncontrolled or resistant hypertension. Dr. Manish Saxena, the lead investigator of the study and a Hypertension Specialist, spoke to Medical News Today about lorundrostat, a drug that inhibits aldosterone synthase, making it both safe and effective for treating individuals with uncontrolled or resistant hypertension.

Lorundrostat's mechanism of action is unique. It targets the production of aldosterone, a hormone responsible for maintaining blood pressure, by inhibiting CYP11B2, the enzyme driving its production. By reducing aldosterone levels, lorundrostat curbs sodium retention and encourages potassium excretion, ultimately leading to a decrease in blood pressure.

In the Launch-HTN trial, lorundrostat, administered once daily at a 50 mg dose, showed significant and sustained reductions in systolic blood pressure. At Week 6, there was a drop of 16.9 mmHg compared to placebo, and at Week 12, the reduction was 19 mmHg – a noteworthy achievement for participants already on multiple medications.

Dr. Manish Saxena says, "The Launch-HTN trial is the largest phase 3 hypertension study with a novel drug. We found that lorundostat has a good safety profile and lowered blood pressure consistently in all of our patient groups."

Two medical experts concur with the findings. Dr. Cheng-Han Chen, a board-certified interventional cardiologist, expressed optimism, saying, "This puts us one step closer to having another tool in our arsenal for patients with difficult-to-control blood pressure despite being on multiple medications."

Similarly, Dr. Rigved Tadwalkar, a consultative cardiologist, noted that "Lorundrostat appears to change that. It inhibits aldosterone synthesis at the enzymatic level, and based on this trial, it does so with a good safety profile and consistent efficacy across a diverse population."

In conclusion, lorundrostat presents an innovative solution for treating resistant hypertension, targeting the aldosterone pathway, which is crucial for blood pressure regulation. With its consistent and sustained reductions in blood pressure across diverse patient groups, lorundrostat may be a game-changer in the fight against high blood pressure.
