Day of Struggle in Neu-Isenburg: a profound demonstration of tolerance and human essence

On a chilly September evening in 2023, the Hugenottenhalle in Neu-Isenburg echoed with the sound of determination as the city, in partnership with the federal programme "Democracy lives!", hosted the "Defend Yourself" event.

The event, organised to promote democracy, civil courage, and violence prevention, was a poignant tribute to Tuğc̈e Albayrak, a young woman who lost her life in 2014 while bravely defending two young girls from harassment.

Mayor Dirk Gene Hagelstein opened the event with a heartfelt speech, emphasising the importance of standing up for oneself and others in the face of violence. He was followed by Doğuş Albayrak, Tuğc̈e's brother, who delivered a moving speech about his sister's courage and the work the family's association, "Tuğc̈e Albayrak e.V", has been doing to campaign for more civil courage since her tragic death.

The evening continued with a series of engaging sessions. Krav Maga trainers demonstrated how self-defense can be effectively used in emergency situations, while the "Defend Yourself - Krav Maga School" and "Selagym Gravenbruch" showcased their skills in a boxing ring.

The founder of Selagym, Keno Seliger, led a training session for a diverse group of children, teaching them the importance of respect, tolerance, and self-defense. Christoph Singer from the "Partnership for Democracy Neu-Isenburg" also took the stage to explain the financial support provided by the federal programme "Democracy lives!" for such events.

"Democracy lives!" emphasised the significance of such events for promoting democracy and civil courage in society. The high numbers of violent acts in Germany were discussed, and the role of combat sport techniques in preventing violence was highlighted.

The event concluded with a reminder that every individual has the power to make a difference. As Tuğc̈e Albayrak demonstrated, standing up for oneself and others can be a powerful act of courage. The "Defend Yourself" event served as a reminder that such courage is not only possible but essential in our society.

Both clubs, the "Defend Yourself - Krav Maga School" and "Selagym Gravenbruch", offered open trial training sessions for visitors to participate, giving everyone a chance to learn and practice self-defense techniques. The event was a testament to the power of community, education, and the memory of Tuğc̈e Albayrak.
