Auckland Lecturer Embarks on Six-Week Fiordland Traverse for Mental Health

Mark Jones, a senior lecturer in Outdoor Learnings at Auckland University of Technology and a Firearms Safety Instructor, is preparing for an epic six-week journey across one of the world's great wildernesses, Fiordland, New Zealand.

Hailing from Auckland's Northshore, Mark has chosen a rugged and vast route for his traverse, starting at Te Waewae Bay on the south coast and ending at the Milford Track, approximately 200km north.

This challenging adventure will see Mark carry only six pre-dropped caches along the way, providing additional food and supplies. He will also be carrying non-perishable, high-calorie meals for sustenance during his journey.

Mark has been training rigorously for this challenge, incorporating 400m vertical stints while carrying 20kg on his back. He believes that everyone grows from challenge and pushing their limits.

In addition to the physical demands, Mark is seeking advice from seasoned Fiordland trampers and adventure racers to prepare for the unique challenges of his journey. He is also supported by the mental health charity organisation "What’s Up," which backs his six-week hike through Fiordland to raise funds for the mental health of New Zealanders.

Mark hopes to raise $10,000 as a donation to Mental Health New Zealand (MHNZ). To help him reach his goal, head to his page for more information and to donate.

Mark has a strong belief in the importance of the MHNZ message for well-being in school and the workplace. He stated that he will need to be realistic about the toll that humping heavy loads will have on his body.

Mark Jones is no stranger to extreme adventures. Previously, he kayaked 800km along the coast of Antarctica and circumnavigated South Georgia Island by kayak.

To keep his supporters updated on his progress, Mark will carry an InReach Satellite Device provided by Trackme NZ. He will also be posting updates on his Facebook page, OneInTheWilderness.

Mark believes that this upcoming adventure will be the biggest challenge of his career. But with his determination and preparation, he is ready to take on the rugged landscapes of Fiordland for a worthy cause.
