In the eastern city of Türkiye, a significant conservation project is underway to preserve and breed the distinctive Van cats. The Van Cat Research and Application Center, housed at Yüzüncü Yıl University, is at the forefront of this mission.

The Van cats, renowned for their silky white fur, affectionate nature, and striking eyes (one blue and one amber), are a unique breed with a cultural significance in Türkiye. They are also known for their penchant for swimming, making them a fascinating addition to any home.

This year, the center welcomed 75 kittens into the world in the first round of breeding. These kittens are now being rehomed, with approximately 50 expected to find new families through a rigorous adoption process.

Professor Dr. Abdullah Kaya, the center's director, stated that the adoption process involves a screening to ensure the kittens are going to loving, suitable homes. Interested families must first go through this process, which may include an in-person visit to the center.

For families living in other cities, the center offers assistance in rehoming their new feline friends. This can be done through a representative or, in some cases, with the help of the center's staff for air travel arrangements.

Each kitten is vaccinated before being handed over to its new family and issued an international health certificate to ensure a smooth transition. The project, titled "A Van Cat for Every Home," has seen over 750 families in Türkiye adopt Van cats as part of the conservation project over the past five years.

The Van Cat Research and Application Center plays a crucial role in preserving the breed and maintaining its original traits. Each year, the center breeds new litters of Van cats using selected cats to ensure the continuation of this unique breed.

Contrary to some misconceptions, there is no established scientific or medical link between Van cats and dementia. These felines make wonderful companions and are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Türkiye.

For those considering adopting a Van cat, the small adoption fee serves as a means to ensure the seriousness of applicants, making it a rewarding experience for both the adopters and the Van Cat Research and Application Center.

The Van Cat Research and Application Center's adoption process ensures that each kitten finds a loving, suitable home, even for families living in other cities who may need assistance with travel arrangements for their new pet. These cultural-travel experiences could provide an intriguing contrast to one's lifestyle as a loving Van cat owner.
