Carterhaugh Activities Recap for June 2025

Let me spill the beans on some rad events and lit can't-miss content coming your way!

Events

June 4 at 6:45PM ET – Smithsonian Associates: "Jack: Tales of the Ultimate Underdog"

You probably think you know ol' Jack, the lad who climbed a beanstalk to the clouds and swiped a giant's loot, but you ain't seen nothing yet! Jack Tales are a whole category of stories that span the UK and US, and guess who's the ultimate underdog who always comes out on top despite being outnumbered and outmatched? That's right – our boy Jack! He ain't just vanquishing giants and dragons, he's messing with his brothers and bagging the prettiest dame in town.

Now, you might've heard that folks from Appalachia are ignorant hillbillies, but these traditional storytellers from the area, particularly the Hicks-Harmon family, would like to disagree. They're putting Jack to work, using him to debunk stereotypes about themselves and their neighbors, showing off their smarts and perseverance.

Folklorists Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman dive deep into Jack Tales, comparing how they're told in the US and UK, explaining why Jack is such a badass, and revealing why these stories have stuck around when so many others have flown the coop. The lecture will be interactive, and you can grab your tickets by clicking here!

June 18 at 7:00 PM ET – Fairy Tale Salon

It's almost summertime, and we're having another chatty get-together, just like last year! This time, we're talking about books that have cracked us up, blown our minds, or made us wish we'd written 'em ourselves. If you want to join the discussion, make sure you're on the Salonnières tier or higher for June!

June 25 at 7:00 PM ET – Book Club

Oh boy, we're super pumped for our June book club featuring Weep, Woman, Weep by Maria DeBlassie! She's gonna be joining us for the discussion, too! The book's about the women of and their never-ending tears at the hands of La Llorona. One of the women, Mercy, survived the Weeping Woman and is now fighting to break free from generational trauma using plant medicine, pulp books, and the promise of a love so crazy it'll leave La Llorona green with envy.

Now, Weep, Woman, Weep has a few trigger warnings, including assault, domestic violence, racism, and colorism, so just be aware of that before diving in. You can gotta head over to our Patreon and be on the $7+ tier for June to join the discussion!
