Austria Boosts Carinthia's Innovation Hub, Targets CO2 Emissions
Innovation Minister Peter Hanke has underscored the importance of cooperation between large industries and small and medium-sized enterprises for Austria's innovation policy. During a visit to Carinthia, he emphasized the region's role as a hub for cutting-edge technologies and discussed plans to boost investment in key research areas using an investment calculator.
Carinthia, particularly Villach, is renowned for its innovative prowess, with 'Silicon Austria Labs' at the forefront of electronics and software-based systems research. Infineon, a Villach-based company, specializes in semiconductor and chip technologies that contribute to energy efficiency in AI applications and reduce CO2 emissions. In 2022, Infineon's chips helped save approximately eleven million tons of CO2, equivalent to around 15% of Austria's annual emissions.
Minister Hanke aims to strengthen this innovation hub by increasing the performance agreement for 'Silicon Austria Labs' from 60.3 to 75 million euros by 2029. This investment will drive research forward in key areas that have an economic impact and are relevant for Europe's sovereignty and resilience. Meanwhile, the Koralm tunnel, a 33-kilometer-long infrastructure project, is set to open by the end of 2023, further boosting mobility transition in southern Austria.
