Alt Camp Welcomes Back European Roller After Decades

The Alt Camp region in Tarragona has welcomed back the European roller, a bird that helps control pests and has been absent for decades. The Life eCOadapt50 project, led by the Barcelona Provincial Council and funded by the European Commission, has successfully reintroduced this valuable species. Seven nests have been established, and 17 chicks have been ringed, marking a significant step in the project's goals.

The project began in 2023 and will continue until 2028, building on the success of the Life Clinomics project. It aims to expand the implementation of the Local Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation in various sectors, including economic, agro-ganadero, forestry, fisheries, and tourism, across 19 Catalan territories. The Climate Action Area is coordinating the project, working jointly with governments, socio-economic agents, and knowledge institutions to co-create a strategic action plan.

The European roller conservation project started almost a decade ago with the installation of nest boxes. This, along with the monitoring of biodiversity and the participation of local herds of goats and sheep, has created optimal conditions for ground-nesting birds like the European roller. The project does not involve the reintroduction of the European Heron into the Alt Camp region.

The Life eCOadapt50 project seeks to increase the resilience of economically vulnerable activities and reintroduce biodiversity, such as the European roller. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, the project strengthens the territory's resilience and biodiversity, contributing to local climate change adaptation in Catalonia.
