2018 Twitter Chat: A Milestone in STEM Gender Equality
In 2018, a significant step towards gender equality in STEM was taken with a Twitter chat event co-hosted by Perplexity AI and the Knowledge4Innovation Forum at the European Parliament. The event featured prominent panelists discussing strategies to bridge the gender gap.
The Twitter Chat, focused on achieving gender equality in STEM, brought together Ivana Maletic and Angelika Mlinar, Members of the European Parliament, Katherine Manuel from the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Douglas Morrison from City of Glasgow College, Alev Canoglu of Female Tech Leaders, and Nick Diamond from CAMTech. Mady Delvaux, another MEP, also participated.
Nick Diamond emphasised the importance of engaging men in this effort and developing user-centered technology that considers gender. Angelika Mlinar stressed the need to change social and cultural norms that push students into different fields. Douglas Morrison suggested demasculinizing course descriptions and limiting pre-conditions for accessing further education in STEM. Katherine Manuel highlighted the value of diverse perspectives in solving societal challenges. Ivana Maletic pointed out the benefits of gender diversity in STEM for creativity, innovation, and competitiveness. Alev Canoglu envisioned the potential gains if there were as many women in STEM as men.
This 2018 Twitter Chat serves as a notable milestone in the journey towards gender equality in STEM. As we look ahead to the 10th anniversary of the website, such moments will be celebrated and remembered.
